Website and Social Media

Are websites and social media important for writers, journalists and other professionals in the cultural sector?

We live in an era of “digital transformation”. The book industry is changing so radically because of the new media and the internet that its own name is becoming endangered. Unlike twenty years ago, writers, journalists, cultural managers and other professionals in the cultural sector do not spend their entire lives at one publishing house or newspaper that takes care of all of their needs in a paternal way. Many do not have the resources to take care of their authors as they did in the past. As the position of writers has grown in comparison to publishers in the digital age, so have the responsibilities and tasks of writers. More than ever, writers today are freelancers, who have to deal independently with the many tasks surrounding their books and other projects. Websites and social media can help them immensely in this process.

Why have a website? Why use social media?

Websites and social media are useful tools in advertisement (marketing), public and media relations, communication and event organisation. They are new powerful tools for authors, journalists and other professionals in the cultural sector to present themselves, gain attention, organise events and communicate – a type of ‘digital business card’. Only those who use these media properly can establish themselves in the digital world – which is becoming more and more indistinguishable from the real world.
